Canon 5D Mark III - Review

I had the chance to play around last night with my new 5D Mk III, and oh. my. word. I am in LOVE.  The new autofocus system is fast and accurate, even in low light.  And with the ability to quickly select from a multitude of crosshair focus points with just one button (joystick) on the back, I can capture a fleeting moment with a desired composition and not worry about missing a beat.  The low light capabilities are astounding, and the new ISO sensitivity combined with the new autofocus system literally had me jaw-dropped.  I simply couldn't stop thinking "WOW!"  The only bad part is, I also couldn't stop thinking about how I want to buy another one.

There are many more improvements to this camera body that are fantastic - and a couple I'm not sure I like (personal preferences) - but the two mentioned above were the most important, most desired, and most impressive for me.

Here are a couple of test shots from last night.  Of my cat.  Because besides me, she was the only one awake (and moving) after midnight.  I had one 100w bulb lamp on in the room.  Other than minor color temp adjustments, these images are SOOC.

***Edited to mention all of these were taken with the 85 1.2, which is notorious for focus hunting in low light.***
ISO 8000 / f2.8 / 1/125s

100% crops

ISO 8000 / f2.0 / 1/500s

100% crop

And because I could...ISO 25,600 / f2.8 / 1/100s

100% crop!!

Major kudos to Canon for nailing it with the Mark III.  Now we just need Adobe to catch up and release an update so I can pull the RAW files into Lightroom! Pin It

  1. Thanks for sharing your opinions. There's so much more to test later. but I also love the build quality, AF, and IQ especially after bumping the sharpness to 6 or 7. vikta, viktas.com
