"If your house was on fire and you only had 60 seconds, what would you grab?" Declan poses this question to Anna in the movie Leap Year (one of my favorite chick flicks!). She thinks about it but doesn't have an answer. But Declan knows exactly what he would take, and it's something sentimental and a part of his family history. (I won't spoil it, in case you haven't seen the movie.)
So I thought about it, and wondered what, exactly, I would try to save if my house was going up in flames. Clearly, we will assume that my husband and two cats have made it to safety, because Chris would react all Adam Sandler-like when he rescues seven cats from a house fire in Mr. Deeds. So would it be my computer? My hard drives? My laptop? No, because I have a cloud backup solution and all that data is safe.
Photos. I would save photos. From back in the days when we all shot on FILM...remember that folks?? I have boxes of prints, negatives, and of course our wedding album. And that...that is irreplaceable. I value the memories of family, friends, celebrations, and places traveled throughout the years of my life. A single photo can instantly take us back to a place and time and allow us to relive those moments. A history of my life can be passed down to my children and my children's children. History and memories - other than what we retain in our own minds, photos are the only tangible items we have to remember these things and pass down through the generations. (And let's face it, when I get older it will be nice to prove to my grandkids that I was once young and non-wrinkly.)
So what would YOU grab if your house was on fire, and you only had 60 seconds?
PS - If you haven't seen this movie, you must!! (Even if only for the fact that Matthew Goode and his accent are HOT.)
PPS - Tradition says Leap Year is the one day in which it's acceptable for a woman to propose to a man. Anyone following this tradition today?

Maternity Session: Becca + Mark
Baby Jake has been to more doctors' appointments than you could possibly know. But this little guy? He's a trooper. And once he's born just ONE month from today, he's going to be loved on by his parents and by the "family" he has yet to meet (unless you consider me pushing on Becca's belly to feel him kicking an introduction!). Though their families are not local, Becca and Mark will have friends who love them lined up at the hospital to congratulate them and see this precious baby boy, to shower him with affection, and to marvel at this new life brought into the world.
Becca and Mark - I'm honored to have captured this precious time in your lives, and I can't wait to meet and hold Baby Jake! All my love to you both....

Weekend Getaway And Flying Machines!
So what I really mean is...aircraft. Amazing planes and other aircraft from throughout history, displayed like you've never seen before. This isn't just any Smithsonian exhibit - it's truly an experience.
This past weekend, Chris and I had a weekend staycation-getaway at a local resort. It's one thing to have a weekend at home, but home is filled with so many distractions and endless things to do. Sometimes it's nice to get away from it all (even if it's not that far away!) - to leave it all behind and spend some time just being together and being present with each other.
We finally visited the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center, and spent hours visually devouring the aircraft on display. With Chris' love of all things automotive, the exhibit of engines throughout history had him drawn in like a kid in a candy store.
The SR-71 Blackbird - the fastest jet ever built - is probably one of the most well-known and biggest draws, along with the space shuttle Enterprise. And it was amazing seeing the Concorde (the supersonic passenger airliner), the Enola Gay (the first aircraft to drop an atomic bomb as a weapon of war), and of course the F-14 Tomcat (who hasn't seen Top Gun a million times?! "Talk to me Goose."). The exhibit was simply amazing, and Udvar-Hazy has quickly become one of my favorite museums!
Aaaaaaand...if anyone is recently engaged - being that Valentine's Day was yesterday :) - and wants to do an engagement session there...call me!! Or if you don't but you need a wedding photographer...still call me!! :)
